FINAL PROJECT IN THE WEB
As described in the Situationist readings and discussions at the beginning of the semester, the derive was an urban expedition in which an awareness of the urban environment and its forces and flows would pull the explorer through the city, remapping or remastering the conventional experience and thuse releasing new connections, new paths, new possiblities. The aim of the final project is to remaster such an experience; capturing or recording the process and assembling an interactive experience of the content. Each student should begin their derive on lower wacker @ Michigan avenue, from this point drift for a minimum of one hour, prefarably longer. You should arm yourself with a camera and if possible a camcorder or video enabled digital camera or microphone. Prior to departing it is probably a good idea to re-read the psychogeography reading. Along the way, record the aspects of the city that are guiding you, left behind articles, signage, smells, people, buildings, passageways, etc... These recordings will be the content of your digital experience.
After your derive, construct an interactive experience using Flash. The goal is to create a digital enviornment that can be explored by a user, a kind of doubling of the derive. Deploy the following conditions in some way in your project.
Integrated media, this should include at minimum one video clip, one sound clip
user based navigation. This should be integrated into the imagery in some way. NO next/previous buttons.
2d map. This map can be a persistent part of the interface or an intermittent or user control display. It should provide a way of coherently locating the user at a point along your derive. It can also serve as an alternative method of navigation. Think about the diagrammatic maps of a video game, especially driving simulations
Atleast one if statement or conditional, allowing the experience to change based on user input.
Provided the projects develop in a timely fashion we wil attempt to interconnect the individual derive's into a collective experience
